About Talk: Ultra-wideband (UWB) is one of the most promising next-generation wireless technologies. The antennas in wireless UWB systems are playing the key role due to many challenges in modeling and design. Since 2002, much effort has been made to develop UWB antennas, in particular for portable devices. This talk will introduce the several designs which have been developed for the enhanced performance of UWB antennas. The antennas with less ground plane effect will be reviewed first. Based on the idea, a further miniaturized design is proposed. With the miniaturized design, a compact antenna with diversity performance is presented. To maintain high performance of UWB antenna but reduce the size of RF front end, a UWB antenna is co-designed for achieving filtering + radiating function. Then, a compact UWB dipole antenna is proposed for stable gain. The last is the tiny UWB antenna fabricated onto a LTCC substrate.
About Speaker: Dr. Chen received his BEng, MEng, PhD and DoE degrees all in Electrical Engineering from
Dr Chen is very active in many international technical events by playing multiple roles as general chairs or key members of organizing committees. He established International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT) in 2005. Now iWAT has become one of the most important international antenna events.
Dr Chen has published more than 220 papers in journals and presented at conferences. He has authored and edited books entitled “Broadband Planar Antennas”, “UWB Wireless Communication” and “Antennas for Portable Devices” all published by John Wiley & Sons. He also contributed chapters to the books of UWB Antennas and Propagation for Communications, Radar, and Imaging (August 2006) as well as Antenna Engineering Handbook (June 2007). He is holding 19 granted and filed patents and has licensed antenna designs to industry. His current research interest includes applied electromagnetics, small and broadband antennas for UWB, MIMO, WLAN, WiFi, WiMAX, WBAN, as well as bio-imaging systems.
He is IEEE Fellow. (www1.i2r.a-star.edu.sg/~chenzn)
