Abstract:

A recent article in IEEE Xplore reported a radically different approach to studying emerging topics in power grid developed by the speaker. Conventional study of power grid follows a simplified circuit model on which analytical results are developed, simulated and experimentally tested. Our work, however, refrains from the use of conventional analytical models which have limited capability for dealing with large scale power grids, but uses a complex network approach to develop key robustness parameters with a network model which has its theoretical basis from both network science and physics of electrical circuits. The article in IEEE Xplore reported that “... what makes this project particularly impressive is that power grids are nearly impossible to analyze at-large due to their scale and constantly fluctuating nature to meet energy load demands..."  In this talk we will introduce this complex network approach and provide some preliminary study results, aiming to trigger more discussion in opening up new arena for power systems research.

Biography:

Michael Tse graduated with BEng(Hons) and PhD degrees from Melbourne University in 1987 and 1991. He is presently Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research focuses include power electronics, nonlinear systems, communications and recently complex network applications. He was recipient of a few Best Paper Prizes from IEEE and other journals, as well as two Gold Medals in the International Inventions Exhibition in Geneva. In 2005 and 2010, he was appointed as IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. He serves and has served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II, IEEE Circuits and Systems Magazine and IEEE Circuits and Systems Newsletter; as Editor of IJCTA and associate editor of a few other IEEE journals. He serves on a number of IEEE committees including the IEEE Fellows Committee and the IEEE Awards Committee. He has been appointed to honorary professorship and distinguished fellowship by a few Australian, Canadian and Chinese universities, including the Chang Jiang Scholar Chair with Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Distinguished Professor-at-Large with the University of Western Australia. He is an IEEE Fellow and an IEAust Fellow.
